With family roots in Poland and Ukraine, Lars Seniuk (born 1989) grew up in Norderstedt, on the outskirts of Hamburg. Although his parents were neither academics nor musicians, he was fortunate enough to receive classical trumpet training from Prof. Hans-Jörg Packeiser and preparatory studies in jazz trumpet from Prof. Ingolf Burkhardt at the Hamburg University of Music and Theatre (HfMT Hamburg). He subsequently studied jazz trumpet and composition (for classical, contemporary, and jazz music) in Berlin and Hamburg. This support, which he received despite his socioeconomic status and immigrant background, formed the basis for his later involvement as a director of NGOs and as a passionate university lecturer and mentor of young talent – central areas of activity and concerns within his own career.
Lars Seniuk was a member of the Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein state youth jazz orchestras and, at the age of 17, became the youngest member of the German National Youth Jazz Orchestra. As a trumpeter, he has performed with, among others, the NDR Bigband, the Global Music Orchestra, the Jazz Kollektiv Berlin, the Andy Middleton Sextet, and numerous of his own projects in a wide variety of styles, ranging from jazz and contemporary classical music to avant-garde and various so-called world music genres.
In 2005, Lars Seniuk founded his first professional big band. Seniuk is the artistic director of the New German Art Orchestra, whose members come from all over Germany and with whom he released the critically acclaimed album “Pendulum” in 2015 (“a captivating listening experience,” Jazz Podium; “Modern big band jazz at its finest,” SWR), which was nominated for the ECHO Jazz 2016 award in the “Big Band Album of the Year” category.
He also works regularly as a composer and conductor with, among others, the hr Big Band, the NDR Big Band, and the WDR Big Band.
The musician, described by the press as a “high-flyer” (Hessian Broadcasting, SWR) and a “jack-of-all-trades” (Deutschlandfunk), led the Hamburg State Youth Jazz Orchestra from 2014 to 2020, developing it into one of Europe’s leading select orchestras and winning the International Big Band Competition in the Netherlands under his direction in 2019.
After teaching positions at the music academies in Frankfurt, Hamburg and Weimar in a wide range of subjects from conducting and trumpet to composition and music theory, as well as teaching, pedagogy and didactics, Lars Seniuk was appointed in 2019 at the age of 29 as Professor of Jazz Trumpet, Ensemble and Big Band and Head of the Jazz Institute at the Music and Arts Private University of the City of Vienna, where he also supervised and taught in the doctoral program.
In addition, he leads international research projects on topics including cultural exchange, digitization in art and teaching and university didactics, works as a curator and producer and gives guest performances and masterclasses worldwide.
His students include numerous international soloists, members of renowned classical orchestras, and university lecturers.
In 2015, Lars Seniuk founded the non-profit initiative Miteinander durch Musik e.V. (Together through Music), which initiates, implements, and supports music projects for refugee children, teenagers, and adults throughout Germany on a voluntary basis and is committed to combating racism and xenophobia. From 2017 to 2021, he also served as the volunteer chairman of Jazzbüro Hamburg e.V., the umbrella organization for jazz in Hamburg, and in 2018 he launched the Jazz & Gender working group, which aims to investigate the reasons for the low number of female jazz musicians and explore potential solutions.
