MISCHA GREULL – Horn

Mischa Greull, born in Basel, was a permanent member of the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich for over 30 years and is Professor of Horn at the Zurich University of the Arts.

His musical education led him from Bern to Winterthur and then to Germany, where he received his first orchestral position. As a solo horn player, Mischa Greull is regularly invited to perform with leading orchestras such as the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Munich Philharmonic, the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, the KBS Symphony Orchestra in Seoul, and many others.

Renowned for his expressive and mellow tone, Mischa Greull has a particular affinity for works originally written for the valveless natural horn, which present a unique tonal and technical challenge. The transitional period from natural horn to valve horn in the late 19th century also gave rise to major chamber and solo works for horn, including Johannes Brahms’s Horn Trio, Robert Schumann’s Adagio and Allegro, and Emmanuel Chabrier’s Larghetto for horn and orchestra.

Since his studies at the Bern Conservatory and the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, he has devoted himself to the performance techniques of both the natural and valve horn. His interest in historically informed performance is reflected in chamber works by Haydn and Schubert on period instruments, as well as in orchestral projects such as the complete cycle of Beethoven symphonies in 2014 with the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich under David Zinman.

His musical career is marked by numerous chamber music concerts on international stages, ranging from the Brahms Trio to Mozart’s Gran Partita. He collaborates closely with the SWISS5 wind quintet and pianist Seung-Yeun Huh. Together, they co-founded the coaching and concert agency SonusArts.

In addition to his artistic activities, Mischa Greull is also active in the field of music physiology. Drawing on his extensive experience as a professional musician and educator, he advises instrumentalists—both students and professionals—on body-conscious playing, the prevention of performance-related injuries, breathing techniques, and mental training. Through his work in music physiology, he combines artistic expertise with in-depth knowledge of the functional relationships between body, breath, and sound, aiming to support healthy, expressive, and sustainable musicianship.
