Bernd Ruf is looking forward to finally being able to travel to Taiwan again after the long coronavirus period. He will play at the Taichung Jazz Festival on October 13 with his son Ilia’s jazz trio. There will also be concerts on October 11 in Kaohsiung and on October 19 at the Yuppy Café in Taipei. The quartet will give workshops, master classes, and university concerts at three universities, National Dong Hwa University, National Chiayi University, and Taipei National University of the Arts. The tour is also the release tour for Ilja Ruf Trio’s new album, HALFTIME SHOW. Once the three young musicians have flown back, Bernd Ruf will stay in Taipei for a week longer as a jury member for film music at the Kuandu International Animation Festival. The tour is supported by the Goethe Institute.

Grammy nominee BERND RUF regularly works with Taiwanese artists and universities. With his GermanPops Orchestra, he recorded several albums as a conductor from 2015 to the present for Sodagreen and in 2019 for Kung Yu-Chi’s solo album. As music director, he performed with his ensembles MHL-PopsChor and MHL-Bigband from the Lübeck University of Music at the Taichung Jazz Festival in 2017 and 2018. He gave master classes at the Taipei National University of the Arts and the National Chiayi University. He was a juror at the Kuandu International Animation Festival in the Corona year 2020. In 2016, he was awarded the Golden Melody Award in Taiwan. Bernd Ruf is regarded as a pioneer of classical crossover. He has headed the Department of Popular Music, Jazz, and World Music at the Lübeck University of Music since 2004 and conducts leading symphony orchestras. As a clarinetist, he is best known for his 20-year collaboration with the Uruguayan bandoneon master Raul Jaurena.

ILJA RUF knows Taiwan from his performances with his father, Bernd Ruf, at the Taichung Jazz Festival in 2017 and 2018. As an instrumentalist, singer, and composer, Ilja Ruf is one of Germany’s most exciting and outstanding talents. Building on his classical training, he works in a wide stylistic field from jazz to pop, tango, klezmer, film, and orchestral music to classical. He has already received essential jazz awards and nominations for record awards. He learned jazz piano from Richie Beirach and Joanne Brackeen, among others.
Fascinated by the Taiwanese art of animation, he asked Jiang Xian-Rui, Lin Zhi-Ying, and Fang Ling-Lin from Foresters studio Taipei to animate his very personal version of ‘Human Nature—Why?’
As a pianist, Ilja Ruf plays with the Swedish trombonist Nils Landgren, among others. His solo debut album, “Ilja_19 – Acoustic Album”, was nominated for the 2021 German Record Critics’ Award in the Singer/Songwriter category. On the album “Utopia – Dialogues in Jazz With My Grandparents,” released in November 2022, Ilja Ruf enters into a musical dialogue with the German jazz veteran, saxophonist Bernd Konrad.
Ilja Ruf studied at the Berklee College of Music in Boston and at the Pop-Akademie Baden-Württemberg
The ILJA RUF TRIO’s new album HALFTIME SHOW will be released on Oct. 11. featuring both instrumental compositions and pop-jazz songs.
HALFTIME SHOW describes the three young musicians’ attitude to life as members of Gen Z in its touching and stirring songs, through musical depth and joyful virtuoso improvisations. The desire to get to know and love the world and its people is what drives Ilja Ruf to write his compositions. Because he sees himself as part of the global community, Ilja writes lyrics in English – he learned songwriting at the renowned Berklee/Boston Music College.

In HANNES PRIES and NIKLAS MÜLLER, Ilja Ruf found two like-minded musicians equally at home in jazz, pop and classical music. These influences can also be heard in Ilja Ruf’s compositions. Based on the traditional jazz trio line-up, the three musicians play a fresh, contemporary jazz sound in which musical depth, a love of improvisation and entertainment flow harmoniously into one another in a unique way.
The Beethoven album “Thunderous Silence – Beethoven: The Heiligenstadt Testament”, for which Ilja Ruf wrote recompositions and arrangements of Beethoven’s music that move stylistically between classical music and jazz, received particular attention from audiences and critics as well as three nominations for Opus Klassik.
